moons and swords

Moons and swords is a series of videos and animations that is cumulatively a 17 minute collection. The task I set up for myself in making these films was to directly map emotionally, psychically and faithfully what came up in the long goodbye that was caring for my father and his terminal illness. I made this work in tandem, as well as in response to, giving care and experiencing grief.

videos include:

→ footage of Beirut intercut with footage of Chicago.

→ A short experimental documentary on my father's fading memory of his father's hand tattoos as well as the process of me tattooing what was remembered onto myself. This video shows the digital documentary intercut with the projection of it onto an installation of suspended plexiglass pieces hand cut to form the shape of my body.

→ An interview with my father about what Haddad translates to from arabic to english.

→ Animation of a remembered performance for my junior high's cultural fair where I represented The Middle East. Rotoscope digital animation onto digitized VHS footage of the actual gym where the performance took place.

→ Arab American Karaoke documentation of my performing Simone's Mabsouta, intercut with its western mirror Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega.

→ My father's karaoke performance of Engelbert Humperdinck's This Moment in Time.

How to Stand Together nursing protocol performance for lifting someone up.

Postcards to wherever you are now, travel notes from a trip taken during the darkest time of year in the darkest part of Iceland after my fathers passing.
