ABOUT
Véra (V) Haddad is a collaborative filmmaker, artist and educator who centers relationships in their creative work. They use the experimental and expressive tools of visual art and filmmaking to articulate complex subjective experiences primarily of the misunderstood, marginalized, or silenced. Earnestness + Humor, The Planet, Portraits of Contemporary Life, Cameras + Darkness – are enduring interests.
Haddad is a self-taught filmmaker as well as the director and editor of Slopehouse Productions where they have co-created music centered documentaries and videos for over a decade. Some recent musical collaborators include Big Thief, Andy Shauf, Florist and Hand Habits. Their project Self-Portrait Service was awarded the 2021 Center for Documentary Studies Lange-Taylor prize for documentary photo with text, alongside their collaborator Sam Richardson. V earned a BFA from The Cooper Union and an MFA from UCLA in the New Genres department. They were recently named among Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film of 2024. Their creative works have been featured on NPR, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone Magazine. Professional Experience
2019 – Present | Self Portrait Service: Creator, Photographer
- Co-creating and concepting free LGBTQIA+ portrait service with artist Sam Richardson which received the Duke Center for Documentary Studies Lange-Taylor Prize (2021).
2010 – Present | Slopehouse Productions: Co-founder and Director
- Creating independent and music-centered videos, documentaries, and commercial content for over a decade. My roles include producing, directing, and editing.
2023 – 2024 | Filmmaking Workshop: Creator, Facilitator
- Created and led a sliding scale, accessible sound, image and video courses at various arts centers, galleries and event spaces in the Hudson Valley. Most recently conducted a session with The Lighthouse Works on Fishers Island for the local island community.
202 | UCLA Summer Art Institute: Painting Teacher
- Taught a two-week college accredited painting intensive course to 18 high school students ages 14-18. This course was centered in expanding and specifying students' painting practices in preparation for college readiness. Wrote syllabus, reviewed assignments, and taught course online. Students came away with new technical skills, confidence in their vision, and a wide range of generative practices to further their creative practice. From dedicated daily practice, learning about other artists' works and exploring materials in new ways students will develop technical and conceptual skills as well as expand and specify their personal painting practices
2021 | UCLA Summer Art Institute: Experimental Video and Animation Teacher
- Taught a two-week college accredited intensive course to 15 international high school students ages 14-18. This course included technical approaches to video and animation as well as theory and history. Wrote syllabus, reviewed assignments, and taught course online. Students came away with new technical skills, confidence in their vision, and five completed video works.
2019 – 2020 | UCLA Department of Art: Teacher
- Taught a ten-week graduate course on innovating instruction at the college level. This course provided incoming graduate students with instructional methodologies, feedback strategies, and inclusive and equitable pedagogies. Wrote syllabus, reviewed assignments, and taught course in person. Each student-teacher came away with teaching experience and training, as well as a greater awareness of their positionality in a classroom.
- Assisted, led, and liaised to students in a variety of art department courses. Beginning New Genres (Spring 2019), Senior Studio (Winter 2019, Spring 2020), Sound and Moving Image (Winter 2020).
2017 – 2018 | Robeson High School | Chicago, Illinois: Volunteer Teaching Artist
- Taught 20 high school students about filmmaking as a medium and method to document and share stories as well as a viable career path. Facilitated analysis of popular media like TV shows, movies and music videos with students.
